Super Sunday - Super Covers #4

It's Sunday, that means it's time to see which beautiful cover is going to be featured on the super cover section. The criterias are pretty simple, the cover must be Jaw- dropping, must indicate the theme of the book. Although sometimes the theme is pretty hard to find out. But most of all it must be the type of the cover that must prompt us to take a second glance. That must seduce us to buy the book . So, which cover did it for me this week.

It was the cover of bestselling Y.A dystopian romance "Shatter Me" by Tahereh Mafi.

I will fight back.
No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal, but The Reestablishment has plans for her. Plans to use her as a weapon. But Juliette has plans of her own. After a lifetime without freedom, she's finally discovering a strength to fight back for the very first time—and to find a future with the one boy she thought she'd lost forever.

Review of Cursed by Jennifer.L.Armentrout

Jennifer is one among among my favourite authors.I loved her Obsidian series. When I heard she had written this standalone work 'Cursed' I don't think I even read the back cover before buying. I have trust in her abilities.

Dying sucks--and high school senior Ember McWilliams knows firsthand. After a fatal car accident, her gifted little sister brought her back. Now anything Ember touches dies. And that, well, really blows. Ember operates on a no-touch policy with all living things--including boys. When Hayden Cromwell shows up, quoting Oscar Wilde and claiming her curse is a gift, she thinks he's a crazed cutie. But when he tells her he can help control it, she's more than interested. There's just one catch: Ember has to trust Hayden's adopted father, a man she's sure has sinister reasons for collecting children whose abilities even weird her out. However, she's willing to do anything to hold her sister's hand again. And hell, she'd also like to be able to kiss Hayden. Who wouldn't? But when Ember learns the accident that turned her into a freak may not've been an accident at all, she's not sure who to trust. Someone wanted her dead, and the closer she gets to the truth, the closer she is to losing not only her heart, but her life. For real this time

Cursed was a good book. But I expected more from her, justified because of how amazing her Obsididan and Covenenant series were. This book just didn't do it for me. The story revolved around the not-so-unique concept of 'touch of death'. Though she did put some uniqueness into it.

Ember is a very strong heroine and I adore her little sister. Whose character was very realistic. The antagonist could be guessed and his backstory though very good, lacked punch. His story didn't justify what he was doing. The author did a bad job on that. I was sad because I knew she could do better than this.
I didn't fall in love with the hero. He was a little confusing at times. I get the whole brooding image of the hero. I guess it is a matter of preference. I don't like that much brooding heroes.

The romance between the leads which were steamy at times lost pace at many instances. So, at the end when they were together I didn't feel that exultant.

Rating : 3/5

Overall, the book is a good read. But since I am huge fan of her and have read many of her better works. This didn't do it for me. Though if it's the first you have heard of her. You could read this. You'll enjoy it. Then you could move on to covenant and then the Luxen series (personaly. I liked the Luxen series better).

                                              CHAPTER 1: PART 1

I knew I was dreaming. Its always the same dream but something was different this time.

The flames surrounding me were still burned blood red ,scaling the tall walls of the room.

Their source, the beacon of fire, tall as a human stood In front of me.I could vaguely feel some force trying to reach me from the other side of he beacon. Even though the beacon stood firm, its flames Intertwining to form a protective barrier in front of me,the dark tendrils of the other force wormed through the barrier.

The beacon had made me feel secure and comforted but the force felt evil and ancient, like  it wanted to suck my life force out of me.

It was trying to lure me ,to be a part of It. I might have succumbed to it but the beacons power kept me at bay.

I looked towards the beacon, something about it was familiar. I Inched towards it but suddenly fell down with a thump. I looked up . I had fallen from a bed. My body was small like a two year old.

Wait! This was a new phase.

I should have already woken up by now. And why was I a child in my dream instead of a teenager.

My thoughts were Interrupted by a loud cry.In a voice filled with agony and rage the BEACON cried and turned towards me or rather a human face turned towards me.

Oh god! The source of the flames isn't the beacon. It is a woman, her long hair flew in all directions ,producing brilliant crimson red flames.Flames like shoots of a red marsupial plant shot forth from her body. But It was her face that caught my attention. She looked like me.

Wait I was a child and a woman in the same dream. It made no sense. No wonder these things are called dreams.

The woman  looked at me like someone who knew death could take them any moment and the wanted to spend her last moments cherishing their precious treasures. No one had looked at me like that before. Her angelic face glistened with teardrops. I wanted to go and and wipe off the teardrops from the beautiful flame woman’s face. But suddenly someone snatched me from the ground.

I struggled against the big muscular arms. How dare he take me away from that woman.I could feel flames shooting from my body, tearing me apart, begging for freedom.I was seriously going to hurt someone.

I struggled against my kidnapper. Then I saw his face and time froze.

Phillip?

My dream got distorted and I woke up.What was Phillip doing in my dream and how did I produce flames . I knew it was dream but !.

The flames felt so real.I could still feel it .

Oh no! It is real.

My room was lit up by dancing flames. They scaled the walls ,covering the door and the window and formed a circle around my bed.I stood up on my bed and the flames grew taller, scared I sat down  and the flames grew short.

Weird.

didn't have anything to put out he fire. Only one thing to do now.

“Mr.Smith. Help. My room Is on fire”, again, I said.

I buried my head in my hands. I cant believe it.  Am I the only one with this weird disease of sleepwalking and setting my room on fire, most importantly, why did it have to happen today of all days.

Suddenly the door burst open.

Conclusion to the New York Times Best selling Matched Trilogy!

Cassia’s journey began with an error, a momentary glitch in the otherwise perfect façade of the Society. After crossing canyons to break free, she waits, silk and paper smuggled against her skin, ready for the final chapter.

The wait is over.

One young woman has raged against those who threaten to keep away what matters most—family, love, choice. Her quiet revolution is about to explode into full-scale rebellion. With exquisite prose, the emotionally gripping conclusion to the international–best selling Matched trilogy returns Cassia, Ky,and Xander to the Society to save the one thing they have been denied for so long, the power to choose.

I loved these covers, They accurately portray cassia's journey and I will shamelessly state that these covers played a huge role in persuading me to buy this series.

Read to find out....

                  Spirit Hunter
                                              CHAPTER ONE : Part One

I held the gun close to my chest.

It gleamed in the pale moonlight sieving in through the holed curtains, illuminating me in its coolness, as I sat with my back against the sofa in the corner of the ancient hall. My position gave me a full view of the hall, while giving myself enough cover.

Where is fat king?i was getting impatient.

“Skyla, patience ALWAYS brings victory” I heard my dad’s voice in my head.

I wonder what my Mr. Perfect dad would have done if he had to work 16 hours straight to trace a bloody spirit, only to have him playing the waiting game with you. What’s more I got school tomorrow, well today, since its already three in the morning.

Guess being a sixteen year old(that means full time duty of a student plus being a single daughter is hard) and a spirit hunter  is not that easy. No wonder teenage hunters were quitting at such an alarming rate. The burden is nerve wracking.

But like my dad ,the grade A hunter David Forrest (not Bekham , though there are similarities) says “if you are here to become a hunter after watching some dumb movie with funny ghosts, then pack your bags this instant and get out. No one is going to make a movie for you , all you will be getting is a cheap coffin. But if you are willing to work hard to save people's lives without any care for your, them, welcome to the family”

I guess that about sums up what we hunters do the things we do.

My thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of rattling chains. My lips began twitching with excitement.

My grip hardens on my gun .With its bullet dipped in black rabbits blood, It was enough to take on the fat king.

The  rankling of chains repeated, from the middle of the room. He had not yet materialized. But the sound of his chains, proof of the days his land was looted, crown stolen, and he himself chained to the very chains I just heard jingling. His body eventually died, but his soul reborn again with a vengeance.

Vengeance defined spirits and nothing else. It would have been fine if they just killed whoever killed them. But no, some spirits just have to wipe out the entire humanity. Well that’s where we come in .

The spirit hunters.

I concentrated my attention on the shapeless joining of white mist. The fat king as I rudely called him was reassembling into a more human but still ghost like shape.

First his arm appeared, the one I had burned using my blazinger. Slowing  the rest of his body appeared and at last his round fat face, which always twisted into a cruel smile before killing his victims, and which  was twisted into one right now.

He glared right at me.

His lips part, “you are a persistent one, my blue eyed hunter”. The last three words he says in an almost flirtatious voice.

I slowly get up, cautious. My legs unbended with a happy sigh.

He stroked his almost transparent, burnt arm(courtesy of me).

In an instant, i took to blink, he turns from a flirting spirit into a one that is madly flying, eyes wild,TOWARDS ME.

Thats it for the first part. What do you think? I have tried to write it in present tense. But I am thinking of giving past tense a try. What do you think. Do let me know in the comment section.
